We are only in the first quarter of 2017, and already our Scan Retail team has been super busy. Recently we attended EuroShop in Düsseldorf, Germany. Hailed as the world’s number one “Global Retail Trade Fair” for retail and exhibition spaces, EuroShop is the international exhibition platform where marketers go to grow. #1 Digital alterable signage


Until recently, retailers addressed customers at the shop window or point of sale primarily with eye-catching posters or displays. But in a smartphone world, retail has moved ahead at a fast pace. With customers were accustomed to looking to screens for information, the crossover between in-store design and digital display features has become even more prominent. It’s a natural choice for aiding content retention, spreading a message, building a brand, improving customer service and experience, and increasing profits. EuroShop 2017 showcased a powerful combination of motion effects and dynamic animated digital signage, paired with high quality printed images, which together created an exciting new sensory in-store experience.

#3 Fabric graphics, sustainable materials, and textural experiences


Dimensionality is a key theme for 2017. Yes, today’s retailers are making things bigger, as was clearly evident at EuroShop 2017; larger backlit fabric prints with high-resolution printing, impressive 3D elements, huge monolithic tiles (tiles inspired by a blend of stone and earthy qualities), and sleek surface materials in white, black and shades of neutrals, all created engaging, eye-catching displays.

Sustainable materials were also in the spotlight. Lightweight materials have become hugely popular, and offer not only crisp, vibrant images, but also the benefit of a minimal transport-related carbon footprint (and the associated cost reduction). And, proving that unexpected materials can take a product to another level, retailers and design agencies were utilising recycled, repurposed and reinvented materials and objects in new and innovative ways, showing that conscientious waste-free craft is valid in-store.


Another design trend that stuck out was textural experiences, witnessed in the choice of materials and their unexpected positioning alongside each other.

A kiosk business can offer fantastic business opportunities. Whether you rent or buy your kiosk, you should start with a small and work your way up to a larger, more permanent kiosk. Whatever you choose, ensure your location is in a high-traffic area and has adequate space. Shop around before deciding exactly where to locate your kiosk. If necessary, apply for business loans at your bank or South African government funding and grants.


1. Decide what you want to sell

Well-known online brand, Vape Cartel, decided to open a new shop in The Village Square in Plumstead, Cape Town.

Vape Cartel is known for providing the finest e-liquids used in vaporettes or electronic cigarettes, as well as hardware and accessories specifically geared to their clientele.

When Vape Cartel contacted Scan Retail in the second week of January, Scan Retail jumped at the opportunity to work with such a niche upmarket brand. Scan Retail prides itself on its eye for design, attention to detail and the way they manage client expectations. As a result of Scan Retail’s proactive response to Vape Cartel’s request for a quote, it was awarded the job.

The client brief was to create a friendly environment where people could come and hang out. Vape Cartel wanted to make their shop the first choice in consumers’ minds for all things vape. The team created a one-stop shop for all vape products and accessories which are easily accessible for their target market.

Scan Retail was tasked with the design of Vape Cartel Display Cases that would incorporate the look and feel of the brand. The idea was to create display cases that combined the brand’s colours and unique style. The designers created modern glass display cases in neutral black and white tones with glass and LED light features.

Scan Retail started the manufacturing process as soon as Vape Cartel gave its stamp of approval. The in-store installations were completed on schedule in mid-February, with Scan Retail doing the necessary electrical work as well.

Vape Cartel was impressed with Scan Retail’s adherence to the project schedule and its high-quality service and awarded it the installation of a Johannesburg outlet as well. The turn-around time for the Johannesburg branch was a mere two weeks, but the team managed to get everything done with time to spare.
